On the midnight of 15 August, 1947 India woke up to its Independence from British Rule. It took immense courage, determination & sacrifice on the part of all the people of India to gain this coveted freedom. Since then India has been a sovereign, diverse, democratic country, governed by the people.

1. Chenab Bridge

At 1178 feet, the Chenab bridge located in Jammu & Kashmir is the World's Highest Rail Bridge. About 115 feet taller than the Eiffel Tower, this arch-shaped bridge in Jammu & Kashmir was completed in April 2021 & will soon be open to rail traffic.
2. Shampoo

Shampooing is an Indian concept & dates back to the 18th century where a variety of herbs & their extracts were used for hair cleansing. The word 'Shampoo' is derived from the Hindi word Champo which means "To Press".
3. Longest Railway Station

The longest operational railway station in the world is in Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh. It is 1366.33 m long. Earlier this record was held by the Kharagpur Railway Station, West Bengal at 1072 m.
4. Majuli Island

The Majuli island in Jorhat, Assam is the largest riverine island in the world. It was awarded the title by the Guinness book of World Records in 2016. Though, the island has shrunk in size over the years due to climate change.
5. First Electricity

The first city in India to get electricity was Darjeeling, in 1897.
6. Indian Railways

The Jeevan Rekha Express also known as the Lifeline Express is the world's first Hospital Train. It has all the facilities for treatment ranging from surgeries to treating cancer. It reaches its services to remote villages.
7. Religion

Many say that Hinduism is the most dominant & prevalent religion in India & the rest are minorities. But Did You Know? India has the largest number of mosques in the whole world, greater than any of the Islamic nations. Also the second largest monastery in the world, the Tawang Monastery, is located in India.
8. Post Office

India has the World's only floating post office on Dal Lake, Srinagar. Situated on a houseboat, it also has a philately museum inside. Not only that, India also has the World's Highest post office located in Hikkim, Himachal Pradesh at a height of 15,500 feet!
9. World Record

As per records released by The Guinness book of World Records, India is third in terms of number of records claimed every year, only behind USA & UK.
